The Set of Fates

The three Fates, or « Moirai » as they originally have been called, of ancient Greece — Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos — were the goddesses of destiny who presided over human life.

The extent of their influence over the other Greek gods is debated, but the control they exercised over the lives of humans is incomparable. They predetermined one’s fate all while permitting the individual to make their own faux decisions throughout. Humans still had free will, but the Fates knew the ultimate choices and actions of each person. Even the gods themselves had to obey the Fates. This meant no meddling in the life span of mortals. You couldn’t save someone that was meant to perish, and you can’t kill someone that was meant to survive. Only Zeus had the power to change the length of a thread and decide where it was cut. Even in the moments before Atropos snipped the thread, Zeus could intervene to make it longer.

They also were the ones who managed a person’s lot in life. We can thank the Fates for all of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The three played a vital role in maintaining the natural order of things by creating and measuring the thread of life. The Fates themselves represented the inescapable destiny of mankind.
